  1. You forgot to add a very important element to the Legacy Family Tree webinars. You can sign on for free to attend live and/or view it for free for three succeeding days, without taking a monthly or yearly subscription. I have been doing this for a couple of years before I took a paid subscription, and I only did that because I wanted to dip into their library of 500+ past ones.

This is a much better deal than Family Tree Magazine where I think the $40-50 price is extremely high; I have found their titles not to be interesting enough to spend that kind of money.

Also, the free YouTube videos from Ancestry have been very helpful; their library is also extensive.

    1. Hi Bernhard,

Thank you for your feedback. I was under the impression that you can access webinars up to one week after it has been recorded. I have mentioned this in my Full Legacy Family Tree Webinar Review. I will have to mention it here also.

The Family Tree Magazine webinars are pretty expensive as you say. Also they don’t have as many titles as Legacy offer so there will be more choice with them.

I like how Ancestry have offered their webinars for free on YouTube. This is great as you certainly do spend a lot on their site to access our ancestors records.

  2. Wow! What a great article. It’s nice to know that there are resources available to use for free. Tracing your families history, to me, is both very exciting and very rewarding.

Most of these companies are new to me. I think pretty much everyone is familiar with Ancestry because they are very good at marketing and delivering results.

I like that these ones in particular are free so its gives us all the chance to take small steps in discovering our true origins and doing so with high efficiency.

I do have a question for you…. Where does someone begin? I’m the desire to learn is the key to starting but, should someone start with the webinars or do you have a preferred route that someone new to this could start with?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Justin,

Thanks for the comment. Actually not all of them are free. Both the Family Tree Magazine and Legacy Family Tree you will need to purchase them in order to view them. Even though you have to pay for these I still recommend that you check them out. They can help you out quite a lot.

To begin to trace your family history you need to start with yourself. Ask yourself what you already know, this will help you later to explore the branches of your tree.

After that you can then ask your relatives for help. This way is also free and will also save you a lot of invaluable time and money as you won’t have to get documents and information that you can get from them.

My recent post 10 Ways To Find Your Family History will show you exactly where to start.

All the best for your genealogy journey.

    1. I am glad that I have inspired you to trace your family history. There are just so many resources out there’s that can help you.

Please check out the rest of my site. I give plenty of guides and tips that will help you along your journey.

  3. Very interesting, I had no idea there was such a market for genealogy. I have seen ads on TV for Ancestry, etc, but that is about it.

I think the Family Tree Magazine seminars sound great. I know they aren’t free, but it sounds like they have a lot of great resources to help you trace your family history.

As you mentioned, it’s hard to rank them in order, but do you have one that you would lean toward? Or is there one that is better for beginners?

Thank you for sharing your insight on genealogy, it’s been very informative.

    1. Genealogy is a big subject Steve, it is the second most favorite hobby in the States behind gardening.

Sometimes we need to put our hands in our pockets and spend money on our hobby. By doing so we will do our research justice, knowing that we have gone out of our way to find out as much as we can about our ancestors.

The webinars are all unique in their own way, so yeah it is difficult to rank them.

Personally I would lean towards the alegacy Family Tree Webinars. There is so much content within their collection and there is something for everybody. They give classes for beginners, DNA, organizing your research, and more. So I would go for that.
