About Genealogy Bank

Genealogy Bank was founded back in 2006 and is a great resource for the beginner as well as the more advanced researcher.

Today the site contains well over 2 billion digitized records from newspapers all across the United States.

These records are an excellent primary resource for the family historian. They will provide you with a snapshot of a moment in the life of your ancestor.

And it is quite possible that what you will discover may not have been recorded elsewhere!

Through my experience tracing my family history, I have learned that every resource is valuable in the pursuit of discovering who my ancestors were.

And newspaper archives are no exception.

So, I do urge you to consider this research when you too are tracing your family history.

And having that resource available to you through newspaper records can give you those details.

They can also give you information that you may not be able to glean from official records.

So, it is worth checking out what they have to offer.

But Genealogy Bank does have other records that can benefit your family history research.

Genealogy records that you will discover in newspapers include:

With Genealogy Bank you will easily be able to search for your ancestors and discover facts and stories about their lives.

Searching for your ancestors by name!

To begin your search you will first need to enter your ancestor’s first and last name.

Entering both of these details will help you to narrow down your search for your ancestor.

Although if they had a very common name, (John Smith for example), then it may take you a while to sift through the search results.

You can though narrow down your search even more by using some handy filters that Genealogy Bank offers.

  • Name – Besides entering your ancestor’s first and last name but you can also select the option “Exact Name Search” to make sure that results will feature the name that you have entered.
  • Keyword – You can enter keywords that you want to search for, but also keywords that you do not want to feature in your search results.
  • Date – The start and end date for your search.
  • Proximity
  • Location – The town or city and state where you want to concentrate your search.
  • Newspaper – The title of the newspaper that you want to search for.

Tips on searching for your ancestors!

  • Alternative spellings – Your ancestor may not have appeared with their correct name, so try alternative spelling if you cannot find them. Also, you may wish to try entering their initials as well.
  • Check more than one newspaper – You may discover through your search that your ancestor may appear in more than one newspaper for the same event. Checking other sources may prove valuable as they may give you more detail about the account/event.
  • Check a large city newspaper – If your ancestor lived in a small town then chances are that they may not have had their local newspaper. You may want to thus check the newspaper records of a large city nearby.
  • Try searching for other ancestors – If you cannot find your ancestor then try a relative instead. You could search for a brother or sister, an aunt or uncle, or even maybe an in-law. This method may also help you to find that elusive ancestor.

Searching for your ancestors by collection or state!

The method highlighted above will bring up a multitude of different records containing your ancestor.

You may though only be interested in finding an obituary record for your ancestor and nothing else.

And that is possible by checking out the following collections:

  • Newspaper Archives – 1690-2016
  • Newspaper Obituaries – 1690-Today
  • Social Security Death Index – 1937-2014
  • Government Publications – 1789-1994
  • Historical Books – 1749-1900

A further method that you may want to use is to search for your ancestor by state.

You can then click on a city for that state to limit your search even further.

Update (May 2018)

Genealogy Bank has taken feedback from its users and has improved the search feature.

Above the search results are filters that you can deselect if you wish. By doing this you will receive more results.

You can now easily select between cities and publications within a city. This is achieved by the added ‘Narrow By Location‘ selector in the left sidebar of the site.

Please see the New Features Added to Genealogy Bank post for more information.

Discovering your ancestors!

Through the searching and filtering process, you will be able to track down the key events in the life of your ancestors.

Events such as their birth, marriage, and even their death. But of course, there will be other pieces of your ancestors’ lives that you will uncover.

When you have hit the search button you will be presented with several results.

Each of these results will show you a snippet of the digitized record along with a few details.

These details will include:

  • Date of the article.
  • Location of the event.
  • The newspaper that features the event.

Sharing what you discover about your ancestors!

The great thing that I like about this website is that not only can you easily search for your ancestors but you can also easily share what you find.

First, click on a record that interests you. You will then be able to take a snippet of the record that features your ancestor.

Once you have done that you just need to enter a few details. These include the title and year of the newspaper, followed by a brief description of the record.

And that’s it!

You then just need to save it. Your snippet of the record will then be saved to your folder.

To share you just download those snippets and then email or message them to your relatives.

You can also organize your finds, create to-do lists, track your recent activity, and more!

This Is A Subscription Site!

Although you may be excited to learn about this genealogy resource and are itching to use it I must point out that you will have to subscribe to the site to view the collection.

Despite that fact, you will find an incredible amount of information here that will surely benefit your genealogy research.

They will help you to prove a family story that may have been passed down the generations or you may read a story that you have never heard before.

Do I Recommend Genealogy Bank?

I have already discussed many reasons why newspaper archives are a great way to research your family history.

Let’s look at them again, shall we?

  1. Proof a family story – A family story that has been passed down through the generations can be verified by a newspaper article. Often a story may become embellished over time but an article that has been written at the time may be a true account of what happened.
  2. Discover new stories – You will discover a new side of your ancestors that you didn’t know even existed. Case in point with my family story where I discovered that my 2nd great-grandfather liked his drink. And because of this, he had a few encounters with the law.

The first point is great because it can prove one way or another the validity of a story.

After all, you are the family history investigator and it is your job to get to the bottom of things and find the truth.

The second point shows just how much newspaper archives can help you to discover your family tree.

Not only that but newspaper archives may be the only account for an event in the life of your ancestors.

So, it is worth checking out what you can find from this valuable resource.

But do I recommend Genealogy Bank?

Yes, I do recommend Genealogy Bank.

These two points prove how valuable a resource that it can be to discover your ancestors and tell their stories.

If you decide to subscribe to this newspaper archive then please come back and let me know what you think of it. I would love to hear how it is working for you.

  1. 95 percent is BS! The actual number of missing papers are far greater then you could ever imagine .Dumba–. Lots of Northern California papers are not archived by anyone and still stuck in microfiche stasis. I could name dozens out of the top of my head.

  2. What an incredible database this is. I’m just flabbergasted a the quantity of newspapers they would have stored to search from.

I like the idea that I can search for a month if I don’t what to sign up for a long contract.

    Appreciate thsi share Owain.

    1. You’re welcome Vince. I was quite amazed at how much Genealogy Bank does cover. I would be surprised if you can’t find your ancestors within this archive. I do wonder whether they will get that last remaining 5%.

  3. Hi Owain.

I’ve often thought about tracing my ancestry and this post certainly gives a lot of detail on how to go about it.
I have a question though, I’m from the UK and I get the impression that Genealogy Bank is geared for the US.
Does it cover UK or can you recommend a similar service that can be used for tracing my UK ancestry?

    Good work.

  4. Newspaper records, historical documents, search for your ancestors by name, all in one website. Fantastic idea!

I am just amazed at how much there is with this resource. I also like the idea that I can try this for a month to see whether I like it. Thanks for including that in your review. Much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    1. Yes Thomas there is a lot of records in this collection that can help you with your family history research. I always urge people to trial something before they do continue and pay more money. But I am sure that anyone that visits Genealogy Bank will want to take full advantage of this site.

  5. Great article on Genealogy Bank. Very in-depth, and well researched. I worked in this field a long time ago, and resources such as this would have helped immensely in the process, which can be long, tedious, and sometimes frustrating. Anyone serious about this type of research will be well served here. Well done.

    1. Thank you for the kind words Tom. It’s very much appreciated. I feel it is not only important to share with the genealogy world resources such as this but also cover everything about them. I am glad that I have done that.

  6. Hi Owain,

I found this post very interesting. I agree we need to know who were in our genealogical tree in order to find our future way.

I wish the best in your business.

    Fabio

    1. Hi Fabio,

I am glad that you found this post interesting. As I’ve said throughout this site you just don’t know what you will discover about your ancestors. The same can be said about newspaper archives. Who knows that you will discover about your ancestors, whether it is good or bad.

  7. This is such an awesome post! I didn’t even know someone can trace back their family’s history through newspapers and such.

It’s almost overwhelming how much information can be found or contained in print. But that also makes it look promising to discover things about myself I may have never known.

Thanks for the info and guide on this. I never knew something like this could exist.

    1. Her quite welcome Kashia. When I first started to trace my family tree I too was amazed at what I could find and also where I could find it.

I feel that newspaper archives are quite underestimated by family historians. So it shouldn’t be discredited. We can learn a lot about our ancestors from this valuable resource.

  8. This is just the kind of thing I’ve been looking for. I can’t wait to get started on this as it does look very promising.

I’m just not quite sure where to start. Where would you suggest for me to begin?

    1. Hi James,

As there are billions of records here it can seem a bit overwhelming. But you obviously need to know where to start.

May I ask how far you have got with your family tree? It’s best to fill in as much as you can before you begin to look at this resource.

Check with relatives and see what they can offer you for your genealogy research. Then when you’re ready give the newspapers a look.

  9. Wow this is so informative and comprehensive. For someone whose family history is as muddled as mine, this would be a life savor. I know so little about my family that it use to cause me pain trying to find out who I am and where I come from. Thank you for this information. This will be a great help in my own family history journey.

    1. You’re welcome Samantha. Records can only show you so much. But newspaper archives can give you the stories. I hope that you find this resource useful for your family history research.
