Need help to trace your Irish ancestors?

Irish Genealogy

Unfortunately, many records have been lost due to the Irish Civil War with the destruction of the Public Records Office.

Dublin’s Four Courts building on the north bank of the River Liffey was largely destroyed by fire on June 30th, 1922 during this war.

An explosion and fire-ravaged this building after a two-day bombardment.

Irish Census returns were lost in this fire, as well as original wills from the 16th Century and parish registers containing records of baptisms, marriages, and burials.

However, not all was lost during this terrible time in Ireland’s history and it is possible to trace your Irish family’s past, (to some extent).

So, if you want to break down those brick walls, find vital records, and discover why your ancestors moved away from Ireland then this Irish Genealogy Mega Collection is for you.

  1. Hi Owain,

I’ve got Irish heritage and so far my family has found out we had some descendants in the Battle of the Boyne and some history in Fermagh. I’ve been waiting to go on a trip to Ireland and Scotland where I will explore this history further. It’s nice to know there are publications/information on the history. I want to go and find out myself.

    Thanks for the information.

    1. Hi Greg,

It’s quite interesting what we can find when we start looking. We just never know what we will uncover. Sounds like you have some very interesting heritage. All the best with your family history research and your trip. Please check out the rest of this site as you will find plenty of advice

  2. I will be definately bookmarking your site as I am really interested in genealogy.I live in Australia. All I know is that my mothers father came from Ireland and my fathers mother came from England. I would love to find out more. Both my parents have passed away and I don’t have alot of knowledge only surnames.

    1. Thank you Kerryanne for visiting my site and leaving a comment. My first suggestion is to start with what you already know and type that up. Then ask any older relatives about your ancestry. You can check out my Ten Step Guide for more information.

All the best with your genealogy research

  3. Hi,

Interesting article. I am not Irish but my sister-in law is.
Anyway, I have always been interested in genealogy in general.

I like knowing who are my ancestors and where they are coming from. And if there are some similarities in term of abilities or talent.

Anyway, always good to get some information in genealogy.

    Nathalie

    1. Hi Nathalie,

Thanks for dropping by. Please share this page with your sister-in-law. Also, please feel free to check out this site further.

      Thanks,

      Owain

  4. It would really be cool to trace back history and find out more about our ancestors. I don’t know anyone who is Irish but If I did, and if I do, I would certainly pass this website on! I’ve never actually done a family tree before, well, maybe when I was at school but it would be fun to try and make one and see how far back you could trace it. I wonder if there are any websites for making family trees, you certainly couldn’t use paper! That would be a long piece of paper!

    1. If you do come across anyone with Irish ancestry then please feel free to pass on this website. I have also covered how to find British and German ancestry, and will be covering more.

You can either use Genealogy Software or Genealogy Search Websites for creating and building your family tree. Using either of these is much better than using paper and pencil. It’s simpler this way than making corrections on paper r having to draw your tree out again and again

  5. Hi Owain, I liked the description of how records were lost. Many good bullet points for “Why Purchase” like hitting a brick wall. Didn’t know there was so much information available. Thanks for listing all the titles that are included and the prices. My wife is really into ancestry. How long have you been studying genealogy?

    1. Tracing your family history can be an interesting past time. Although it can be quite overwhelming at times with the amount of information available or even the lack of. I thought it was important to point out just exactly why there is a problem for people to track their Irish ancestry. There are though sources available that can help you, which is covered in this collection.

I have been researching my family’s history for the past six years. I was fascinated by my father telling me old family stories. I first started writing these up and then my fascination with genealogy just snowballed from there’s.

  6. Great review! That’s a lot of resources in this package and I’m sure that someone with Irish Ancestry will be able to get some leads.
I’m Polish Canadian and I have some concerns as to how to go about looking into my family ancestry.
Poland literally disappeared from the map for 123 years and Warsaw (where my family was from) was completely destroyed during World War 2 and it had to be rebuilt.

Is there a book similar to the one you reviewed that would help me locate my ancestry? Do you think that considering the circumstances I will be able to find out a lot about my history?

    1. I have found the following which will be quite useful to you – The Family Tree Polish, Czech, and Slovak Genealogy Guide E-book. It does cover Czech and Slovak heritage but it does mention that if your ancestors hailed from Warsaw then this tool will help track down your roots.

Also, this book covers immigrants who arrived in America rather than Canada. But it is still a useful book for you. If you prefer a paperback then here is the link – The Family Tree Polish, Czech, and Slovak Genealogy Guide.

All the best with your genealogy research.
