Express Your Thoughts Below!

I would love to hear from you.

Recording My Family History!

My father began researching the old-fashioned way, i.e. using pencil and paper.

This was good to start with as we could see our family members in a clear and concise form using pedigree charts.

However, as updates and corrections were inevitable these changes made the charts look very messy.

Therefore we needed a better way to record our family history.

And that is where pre-printed forms and charts came in.

Advantages of pre-printed forms and charts!

Before I begin to show you where you can download and purchase these forms and charts I first want to discuss with you the many advantages of using these types of documents.

So, what are the advantages of recording your family tree and your ancestors’ details on forms and charts?

Advantages include:

  • See more clear information than on a text-only report.
  • See relationships between members of your family easily.
  • Helps you with your record-keeping as you can see who is missing from your family tree and any of their details.
  • Makes your research quicker and can help you become more effective in your pursuit of your ancestors.
  • Reduces any duplication of records and stops you from redoing any research that you may have performed already.
  • Your ancestry becomes more interested in members of your family, including children, if presented in this way.
  • They can outlive your digital records if you do not update them regularly.
  • Used as gifts and presents for birthdays, Christmas, and special days.
  • Used for family gatherings and reunions when interviewing members of your family.

Benefit of Genealogy Software Programs!

Genealogy software programs are another way that you can record your ancestors and add their details.

The advantage of this method is that you can easily enter and edit information.

Also, after you have put in their details you can then print out many different reports and charts that are included in the software program.

My Final Thoughts

As I pointed out at the start of this post there are many benefits that you can gain from using forms and charts for your genealogy research.

For me, the most important benefit of these resources is the fact that they can speed up your research time.

By simply putting in the information that you have found into a pre-printed form or chart you can save both time and money compared to if you were to create these yourself.

Pencil and paper are so yesterday!

Would you want to hand draw these forms and charts every time you have additions or there are corrections to be made?

Also, genealogy software programs have made life so much easier for the family historian.

Not only will these programs help you to create and build your family tree but you can print out the results of your findings both quickly and easily.

Software programs are the way!

RootsMagic 7

The RootsMagic 7 program offers the most reports and charts out of all the genealogy software programs that are available on the market today.

However, the other genealogy software programs that I have reviewed are all excellent to use for the family historian.

So, please check them out.

They will make your life a whole lot easier!

What do you think?

If you decide to buy any of these resources then please come back and let me know what you think. I would love to hear from you.

  1. Hi, Owain. I find your genealogy information very resourceful. Until recently I never actually put much thought into my family tree. Well, was wondering where does one even begin? At least I now have a starting point. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Some good information here. I actually have a some solid information about my ancestry that goes back centuries. As of right now all my notes and family letters and other forms of documentation is loosely kept in various books and binders. I need to organize it and put it into a document that is easy to read and research.

I am most certainly going to check out the Essential Family Tree Forms Vol 1 and 2.

I am a descendant of George Calvert, Lord Baltimore. One time Ambassador to France, one time member of the Privy Counsel, Secretary of State – all under King James I in the early 1600s. Of course he is also known for Avalon colonies and his son for the Maryland colony.

Anyway, it is interesting to know where you come from, and making sure you can pass that information down to the next generation.

    1. You certainly do have some interesting ancestry. I got interested in my family history because of the stories that my father told me. Because of this I have recorded these in a book. It would be a great idea if you did the same too.

These forms are a great way for you to organize your family history. It would also be a great idea to use a genealogy software program. Who knows you may find new branches and family members by connecting genealogy search websites, such as Ancestry for example.

      1. I did use the Ancestry a few times last year doing some research on my mother’s side of the family. I was trying to prove that I had some ancestors that fought in the American Revolutionary War. I did manage to make several connections. My intent was to be able to join “The Sons of the Revolution”. In order to join you have to have to be able to show you have a direct ancestor that fought in the war.

The Sons of the Revolution is an interesting fraternal organisation… My membership application is waiting for approval.

  3. Thanks for this interesting topic. I am not very familiar with this, but I’m glad I read your post. Growing up I’ve always asked several questions about my great grand parents and their parents as well.

What there names were, what years they were born…and my grand ma would sit with me and my siblings and explain ‘only what she could remember to us. Sometimes she would draw pictures to explain further.

Another point that really struck me which I really like about your post is the fact that after recording your family tree information on forms they can be GIFTED. I love that. This is great! Proper documentation of the family tree can be passed from generation to generation. Thanks again.

    1. Hi Beatrice,

I am always pleased to hear people say that their parents/grandparents have told them stories about their ancestors. And also that they have asked questions too.

Our relatives have mountains of information that can help us trace our ancestors. And also that information is free. They can help us save both time and energy. And they inspire us to take that family history journey.

We can certainly make a gift out of what we find. I am planning to cover this in a new additional section to the site that is coming soon. So stay tuned for that.

  4. For a long time I have been wondering on how I can do my geneology but I have always hit upon a rock, or rather a brick wall.

When I saw your post it sparked my enthusiasim, but do these geneology softwere programs really work?

What if the only info you know about your ancestors only date back as far as your grandfather?

    1. Hi Naboth,

I am glad that I have encouraged to trace your genealogy. It doesn’t matter if you only can go as far back as your grandfather as these programs can connect to genealogy search websites where you can get hints. By using these hints you can effectively go further back.

I wish you all the best in tracing your ancestry.

  5. Hi Owain,

A very nice and informative post.I enjoyed it.

It is something really new to me.I could remembered how i recorded my family tree during the childhood days.By drawing and pasting pictures of family members on a drawing paper.Quite messy.

It is a good idea to keep a proper record of the family history using charts and forms.Very effective for big family hierarchy.

    Warm regards,
    David Koh

    1. Hi David,

If it is for fun then you can draw out your tree on a piece of paper. Children can get interested in family history by this method. Incidentally I am planning to write a post about encouraging kids to do family history.

However, for the serious family historian pre-printed forms and charts are the way to go.

  6. Great information and I love all the free resources! I wanted to try Ancestry but it seems expensive. Do you think Ancestry.com is worth the monthly fee?

    1. Ancestry does have a lot of records for you to browse through. Also, it has the most members for any genealogy search website. And their latest too, AncestryDNA can help you immensely.

If you are just starting out then I would suggest free methods. My Tips For A Free Family History Search post will be of use to you. Once you have exhausted the options in that post I would suggest for you then try out Ancestry.
