Legacy 8

You can also change the functioning of the program of as well. So every time that you exit the Legacy Family Tree you can ask it to automatically backup your work.

No matter what you change with this program all of these settings will be saved and will be used for your subsequent settings.

2. Huge Capacity

Whenever you add information into a computer you do not want to be constrained by how much that you are allowed to enter into the program. With Legacy you are able to add as much as you want to.

So you can virtually add an unlimited number of people and families into this genealogy software program.

Legacy 8 Has Huge Capacity

With each family you are allowed to add up to 60 children. I am sure that this is more than enough for any family. Each person that you enter into the program can have an unlimited number of parents and spouses. So this is great flexibility with this program.

You can also add an unlimited number of sources, events and media such as pictures and sounds for each individual.

3. Powerful and Intelligent Merging of Duplicate Information

There is always new information that we can learn from fellow genealogists. With that we can get new family trees sent to us by our relatives that we can add to our own tree.

Legacy 8 Merging

The merging function of this program allows us to see all of the duplication information. From this we can make intelligent decisions as to whether we want to keep the information or discard it. Any extra information is added to either notes or events for each individual.

Usually whenever we work with more than one family tree file there will bound to be variances with the spellings of family names. The advantage of Legacy is that these names can be sent alternate names list. More on this later.

4. Multiple Parents

As I mentioned earlier in the second reason for why you should buy Legacy Family Tree software you can also add an unlimited number of parents for an individual. This makes tracing a person’s birth parents and adoptive parents family trees possible.

5. Powerful Searching Capabilities

With any genealogy software program we want to be able to use and add a family tree easily. We also want to searching for individuals or groups of individuals with the same amount of ease.

Legacy 8 Searching

This is possible with Legacy by either the simple fill-in-the-blanks forms or by using powerful detailed searching. We can view individual records one by one with this kind of searching. We can view the results as a list if we wish. Further searches can subsequently add more people to the list or replace the list entirely.

The possibility of wildcard searches is also supported with Legacy.

6. QuickFill Fields

The advantage of this genealogy software is the capability of QuickFill Fields. So when you are entering information into your family tree the program will automatically fill in the remainder for you.

The advantages of this are twofold. You don’t have to type in the entire name or location. So this will save you time when you are adding to your family tree.

Secondly, if you forget how a name or location is spelt you just start off with what you know. The program will then fill in the rest for you. This will save you from entering miss spelt information.

7. Date Calculator

The great thing about Legacy is that it can calculate important events in our ancestors lives. So for example if we have a death date and an age at death it can then calculate for us when our ancestor died.

Legacy 8 Date Calculator

If our ancestor died on 26 January 1763 at the age of 67 years and 10 months then it will show us that they were born in March 1695.

8. Bookmarks and History List

If we want to retrieve information on a certain individual we can easily use the search function. However, we can also place a bookmark on a record or a certain number of records. This will be advantageous for us when are currently working on an individual or a particular family.

A history of bookmarks is also stored within Legacy. So you can view the history of the last 20 to 160 individuals that we have searched for. This can help us whenever we are backtracking through our research.

9. Complete Source Documentation

Part of becoming a genealogist or a family historian is to properly cite our sources of information. This is possible with Legacy with the use of the master source citation system.

Legacy 8 Citing

Whenever we add new information we can cite it through the Source Clipboard feature. So when all of our ancestor’s information is entered we just click a button and cite the source effortlessly.

There is also an AutoSource feature that can allow you to assign a source to all imported records. This will help you tell where they came from in the future.

10. Alternate Names and Events

I touched upon this in an earlier point. During the lifetime of our ancestors they may have been known with different names by different people. If we are also working with other researchers then it is possible that their spelling may differ to ours.

This is not a problem with Legacy as all of these variations can be placed in the Alternate Names field for an individual. This will help you see these names easily rather than them being hidden away in the Notes section of an individual.

11. Pictures and Sounds

One of the major advantages with Legacy is the capability to add a virtually unlimited number of people to our family tree, The same can also be said about adding media such as pictures and sounds.

Legacy 8 Pictures and Sounds

A self-running photo album can be displayed as well for members of our family. A narration can be added to this photo album if we wish.

Legacy 8 Relationships

Relationships such as this can be viewed within the Family View of the Legacy program.

15. Publish Books

Printing reports is helpful for us family historians. Through these reports we can work out all the information that we have on an individual or a particular family. It can help us make sense of it all.

With this genealogy software program we are also able to publish books on our family tree. So we could either print out ancestor or descendant books. These books will feature a title page, and both a table of contents and an index for easy reference. We can also include pictures that we have added to our ancestors.

16. Birthday and Anniversary Calendars

Another thing that I like about researching my family tree are the important dates. So whenever a particular date comes up I know that that was when my grandparents married or that was the date that my grandfather died for example.

Legacy Family Tree allows you to produce calendars for groups of people or couples. These can show birthdays, anniversaries and so on. With this genealogy software program the contents are completely customizable.

This file type is supported with Legacy as well as other non-standard ones as well. Personal Ancestral Files or PAF can also be imported into Legacy as well.

Not only can you open one file and see different parts of your tree at the same time but you can also do the same with two files. The advantage of this approach is that you can compare two family trees side-by-side.

Wow this product sounds way more simple than the way that I used when I recreated my family tree a few years ago. I had PILES of papers, and then how do you index and cross index everything?? Let’s just say, not fun.
Genealogy is a very interesting and important thing to myself and my family as we like to hold true to our roots.
Very good write up and I wish you the best on your life journey.

Genealogy software is the only way to go. The use of computers has made this hobby easier to do and also more popular too. You can do so much with software and Legacy is the best one for you to chose.

  2. Emma

Wow this is amazing! I have heard about family trees but never thought it’d be possible to keep track of all those people going waaaay back- but of course computers can do it! It would be fantastic to have something that you could pass down to your children for them to fill in and continue building the family tree! You never know where it might end up!

    1. Owain Post author

That’s right Emma. It’s a great hobby that you can do and pass on to your children, and even children’s children. You could also work on it with your children if you wish.

And the joy of this hobby is that you do not know where you will end up. That’s the mystery of genealogy.

  3. Craig | UK TV Services Abroad

    Hi Owain,

Great article. I’m pretty sure 60 children will be enough for one family too! The most I have heard is 21 children, even that is frightening. The detailed search on Legacy Family Tree looks good. I like how you can do advanced search techniques by country and place of death etc.

I also like the different reports that are available for printing. To be able to have 25 different charts is pretty impressive. Can a soft copy of these be saved too? If so, do you know which formats are available?

This Legacy Family Tree is pretty impressive and the 20 reasons why you should buy are very convincing. Thanks for all the information.

    1. Owain Post author

      Thanks Craig.

I’m sure too that 60 children is enough. In my family I have seen at most eleven.

We all want to show the fruits of our hard work when it comes to researching our family history. So it’s great that we can show our results through many different chart types.

Legacy supports 25 different file types. The main ones are BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG and TIFF.

Hope this information is helpful to you.

  4. Jed

Legacy family tree is an awesome software. The creators of the software must have have taken a lot of pain and countless hours of coding that we can only imagine. That have gone to a great extent to integrate every possible feature.

The simplicity and feature rich software makes me think to go get one for self. Thank you for the detailed review of this product it is much appreciated.

    1. Owain Post author

You’re quite welcome Jed. Legacy does offer the genealogist a lot. With any type of software there is always updates and Legacy are always improving.

  5. Furkan

I think 9. Complete Source Documentation is really useful since properly citing the work will make it clear for everyone and it provides easier accessibility to the data. Surely some other people can find more data about their ancestors as well. Is Legacy 8 the best program for it?

    1. Owain Post author

Citing your sources does take a bit longer with Legacy than other genealogy programs. But with this software you are allowed to create correctly formatted citations.

  6. Kevin Bulmer

    Hi Owain,

Terrific post! The capacity and customization of this product look very attractive, among all the other benefits you’ve listed. I really appreciate the way you’ve got each benefit so clearly laid out. It’s easy to understand and to get excited about the potential of truly exploring something like this, and what it could mean to a family. Well done, as usual!

    Best wishes,

Thanks again Kevin for your kind comments. I have written before just how useful this product is. But I wanted to write a special post just pointing out all the reasons why you should buy it. Legacy Family Tree is a very useful software program for any genealogist who wants to create and build their family tree.

  7. D. McLean

Hey, I’m looking for a software which allows me to search my own database for interesting groups of individuals and generate a report. For example, perhaps I want to see all the people in my database who served in a particular war (granted, I would have entered that data), or all those who died before the age of 10, or all those who lived past 100 years of age. Maybe all those who were married in a particular province or county. Or all who were born in a particular county between particular dates.
Does Legacy have that capability? If not, do any of them have that capability? It just makes for more interesting discussion with the family, and seems like it would be a rather easy search tool to implement, it’s just another data search option. But I can’t seem to find it!

    1. Owain Post author

      Hi there,

Thank you for your query. I am pleased to say that Legacy 9 can help you with that. If you check out my latest What’s New With Legacy 9? post you will see that it has a feature called Hashtags, (#7 in the list of new features).

From this feature you can add unlimited hashtags to people in your database. So you can add a hashtag for people served in the Civil War, or lived to a particular age.

It does make for interesting conversation as you say and I really like that the latest version of Legacy can do this.

All the best with your decision.
